  • 1999 scholarship recipients
    •  The recipients of the 1999 PAA of UCLA Scholarships

One of our scholarship recipients this year is Lillian Climaco.  She is a third year Physiological Sciences major.  Lillian's goal is to become a doctor.  Her determination in pursuit of this goal is matched by her
commitment to community service.  She volunteers her time at UCLA and the community at large through her participation in SPEAR, UCLA's on-campus student project for Pilipino retention, and Pilipinos for Community Health where she also served as the newsletter editor.

A product of Los Angeles, Lillian returns to her high school in Carson to encourage students to excel and seek higher learning.  Her love for the Pilipino cultural arts led her to become a dance instructor for the UCLA Sayaw ng Silangan dance troupe as a freshman.  Currently, she is the Cultural Coordinator for UCLA Samahang Pilipino.  In this capacity she has both inspired and instructed students and audiences alike.

For her commitment to the Pilipino community, educational achievement and strength of character, we are proud to honor Lillian Climaco as a Pilipino Alumni Association of UCLA scholarship recipient.

      -----------

It is a pleasure to see this student grow in both academics and community involvement.  To see this student blossom into a dedicated and humble leader.  Quoted with saying:

'To be a Pilipino at UCLA is a privilege.'

This is an often-repeated phrase by Pilipino student leaders at UCLA.  Often times Pilipinos forget that just being a Pilipino in America is a privilege within itself: a privilege that Pilipinos fought for in the past
and continue to fight for today.

Today this one UCLA student continues to fight for our community. Majoring in History and Asian American Studies and Minoring in Public Policy.  A co-founder of PULSA, Pilipino Undergraduate Law Students
Association, and Fil-Vote participant.  And a current recipient of the Woodrow Wilson Fellowship at Princeton University.  The Pilipino Alumni Association of UCLA is privileged to present this scholarship to Rod Sasis.

      ------------

Our 3rd recipient is a junior pursing a degree in Physiological Sciences.  He is currently in the College Honors program (the highest academic honors that is conferred to undergraduates) and departmental honors in Physiological Sciences.  While the pursuit of achieving academic success has been recognized with various honors and awards, he also focuses his energy towards another aspect important to him -- serving his community.

Throughout the past three years he has striven to educate our Pilipino community of various health issues.  He also serves his community by tutoring with Project W.I.L.D, volunteering at the UCLA medical center,
being active with PCH, Pilipinos for Community Health, and volunteering with SPEAR.

While pursuing academic excellence and serving his community, he also finds time to be a contestant on the Price is Right.  So tonight we award Renchell James Andres with the 1999 Pilipino Alumni Association Scholarship generously supported by the Gaspar Family.

  • 1998 scholarship recipients
    •  The 1998 PAA Scholarship were presented to the following outstanding individuals:
      • Our first recipient is a 3rd year majoring in Political Science with a specialization in Asian American Studies.  This past academic year he was awarded an Angie Kwon Memorial Scholarship for Community Service, a Lorrie Ross Scholarship for Academic Achievement and just recently accepted as a fellow in the Woodrow Wilson Program for Public Policy.  This past year he has served as president of Samahang.  He beleives that being a conscious and educated Pilipino is not only a privilege but also a responsibility.   Tonight we honor Mark Ng with a Pilipino Alumni Association Scholarship.
      • Our second recepient is a 4th year senior majoring  in Women's Studies with an emphsasis in Asian American Studies.  This past year she has served as Head Coordinator for PTSP a organization that outreaches to Pilipino transfers students.  She beleives that community service as an intergal part of her everyday life verses it as something "extra".  Our second Pilipino Alumni Association Scholarship is awarded to Maryann Szyskowski.
      • Marnelli Tabbada is our third recipient and receives the first ever Loimuve Computing Scholarship sponsored by Robert Gaspar '95.  She is a 2nd year Electrical Engineering student.  She is currently the president of  PIE (Pilipinos In Engineering), an organization that supports UCLA Pilipino engineering students.  She is also working as a Resident Computer Intern (RCI).  As an RCI, she puts on workshops for the dorm residents to learn more about computers.  Marnelli plans to graduate with a BS degree in Engineering and work in consulting and management.  While she is extremely active at UCLA and her community at large she plans to continue to remain involved after graduation.  Marnelli believes the youth today need visible role models to help them develop into responsible citizens.
      • Rebecca Mendoza is also a recipient of the Loimuve Computing Scholarship. She is a Chemical Engineering student.

  • 1997 scholarship recipients
    •  In 1997, PAA was proud to present its 3rd year of scholarship awards at the UCLA Samahang Pilipino 25th Anniversary Celebration:
      • Our first recipient is a junior transfer student pursuing a degree in Biology.  Her ultimate goal is to complete an M.D./Ph.D. and contribute her talents to serving the disadvantaged Pilipino communities.  She plans to be an advocate of Pilipino health issues both as a physician and as a medical researcher.  For her excellence and commitment to research she will spend summer of '97 at Cornell University as a recipient of a Microbiology Undergraduate Research Fellowship.  This year we award Pilar Pichon with the Pilipino Alumni Association Scholarship for her commitment and dedication to serving her community and her pursuit of academic excellence.
      • Our second recipient is a third year Biology and English major.  His work entitled "Proton Magnetic Resonance Imaging of Brain of Children with CNS Tumors" was published in the Society for Neuroscience Abstracts.  It is a great honor to have work published at such young age.  He is committed to serving his Pilipino community as a doctor "hoping to improve their lives and making a difference."  He believes our Pilipino youth are our future and we as a society should continue to recognize their talents because they are our link to the past, present and future.  This year we award Joseph Abrajano, our investment in the future, with the Pilipino Alumni Association Scholarship.
      • Our third and final recipient is a senior majoring in History with a Specialization in Asian American Studies.  She plans to pursue a Ph.D. in history, in order to teach and advocate for ethnic studies and the progressive study of socially marginalized people.  She is an excellent role model and hopes her contribution in academia will directly affect the positive construction of identity in our young people.  In recognition for her passion and dedication to serving her community and pursuing academic perfection, we honor Cathy Serafica with the Pilipino Alumni Association Scholarship.
