PAA Mission

PAA of UCLA established in 1993, strives to promote the academic and professional development of the Pilipino Community.  PAA provides a vehicle through which alumni, students and friends of UCLA can unite, encourage and support one another.  By continuing to build a strong foundation, we will ensure the growth and strength of our community.

PAA History

1991

  • began in 1991, gradautes '91 led by Corky Pasquil

  • Pilipino ALumni felt void after graduation

1992

  • wanted to go through UCLA Alumni Association to make it official

  • had to justify being seperate from Asian Pacific Islander Alumni Association

  • overall goal: community service

  • service based organization serving UCLA students

  • 3 visions: mentorship, scholarship, networking

  • Made official 1992

1993

  • kickoff event for PAA held at Fowler, attended by students & alumni (some 15-20 years ago)

1994

  • programming started with mentorship

  • first time PAA sponsored P-Grad (in its 2nd year)

    • T-shirts made, helped usher, etc.

1995

  • 1st scholarship awarded ($500) announced at PCN '95

  • 1st time really made name recognition

  • Aris Tagle assumes PAA chair position

  • Board of about 10 people

1996

  • refocused on Mentorship

1997-1999

  • 1997: 25th anniversary of Samahang Pilipino

    • used event to validate PAA, co-sponsored with Samahang

    • reception, conference, dinner/dance

  • James Bonuan assumes PAA chair

  • new focus: getting name recognized

  • 1st tailgate party

  • advisory board created: more established alumni, 2 year term, serve as resource

  • mailout sent (about 2000), funded by SIPA (Joel Jacinto served on advisory board)

  • established more solid relationship with UCLA Alumni Association

  • Diversity Council: made up of Diversity Outreach groups of UCLA

  • co-sponsored APA networking night (Asian Alumni night)

2000- 2001

  • Karen Mangon assumes Board Chair position

  • New Board takes PAA into new focus

  • Board Members increase

  • retreat for new board and re-envisioning PAA's goals and future

  • April 27 - first PAA Fundraiser Benefit

2001- present

  • Rocelle Bade assumes Board Chair position

  • retreat for new board and re-envisioning PAA's mission, goals, and future

  • 2nd annual tailgate party
